Shilajit Powder

What is Shilajit used for?
Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic doctors as a rule do not use pharmaceuticals, as they believe that a human body can heal itself better with natural substances. Naturopathic medicine has recently started to use Shilajit. Naturopathic doctors use it for the many benefits, efficacy and absence of side effects obtained from high-end Shilajit resin. Conventional naturopathic medicine still liberally borrows its Shilajit application from Ayurvedic and East European Traditions including Siberian Shamanism and Traditional Soviet Medicine.
“… a human body can heal itself better with natural substances.”
Naturopathic medicine emphasizes prevention of illness and maintaining optimal health through the use of therapeutic methods and substances that encourage an individuals’ inherent self-healing powers. They seek to identify and remove the underlying causes of illness rather than to merely eliminate and suppress symptoms. The practice of naturopathic medicine includes modern scientific, as well as traditional and empirical methods. Naturopathy recognizes an inherent self-healing process in people that is ordered and intelligent. Naturopathic physicians act to identify and remove obstacles to healing and recovery and to facilitate and augment this inherent self-healing process.
Naturopaths follow strict guidelines to avoid harming the patient: utilizing methods and medicinal substances which minimize the risk of harmful side effects, and using the least force necessary to diagnose and treat. They avoid whenever possible the harmful suppression of symptoms, and acknowledge, respect and work with individuals’ self-healing processes.

Shilajit and Ayurveda.
Ayurveda is a traditionally established, alternative medicine system native to India. It is an ancient health practice that has many similarities to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) including its holistic and preventative approach. As with TCM, the aim of Ayurvedic medicine is to bring the body into balance. This is achieved through dietary change, the prescription of herbal medicines along with Shilajit and the regular practice of yoga asanas and meditation.

Shilajit is inherent to Ayurveda, and is considered a supreme healing substance by a foundational text of Ayurveda: Caraka Saṃhitā. This ancient medical text, containing 120 chapters, was a guide to Ayurvedic physicians in India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka for approximately 2,000 years. According to Caraka Saṃhitā, there is no curable diseases which can be cured without Shilajit. Shilajit was traditionally used as a “delivery system”, amplifier, harmonizer as well as a self-standing medication in Ayurveda.
Due to the popularity of Shilajit in ancient India all the way to present times, natural reserves of this medicinal substance were almost wiped out in India. Nowadays, most imitation products posing as “Shilajit” come from areas of the ancient Gupta Empire (today India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal). The Himalayas, once rich in Shilajit bearing rocks, currently are not capable of producing enough even for the wealthy users of India. Due to high demand over centuries, India has developed the capacity to manufacture fake Shilajit, a lot of which is being exported due to cheap manufacturing costs. The danger of such imitations has to do with the gasoline standard in India. The country still uses an obsolete leaded gasoline to fuel cars. It is very common to find abnormally high levels of lead and other environmental heavy metals in fake Shilajit.

Shilajit and Siberian Shamanic medicine.
In Siberia, Shamans also served as physicians to local tribes. They performed not only spiritual duties but also healing ones. Being a shaman meant being a gatherer of knowledge and keeper of tradition. Northern tribes were not bound to Ahimsa (the way natives of India were), and a lot of their knowledge was gathered and tested in hunting expeditions.

Shilajit in traditional Soviet medicine and Indian pharmaceutical science.
Shilajit, also known as Mumijo in Russian, was studied in depth in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s in the Soviet Union and India. Universities in both countries have contributed substantial scientific resources to exploring the substance in finding ways of using it to improve human health. Most interesting is that even though modern science established, that Shilajit is not a panacea and not a wonder drug, it turned out to be as close to that as possible. Mineral pitch was classified as a premium natural stimulator, which normalizes homeostasis of a human organism, and beneficially effects all bodily systems. Modern medical research showed, that Moomiyo has an effect on regeneration of damaged tissue, neutralizes various forms of radiation, improves blood profiles in an expedited way, is a nonspecific immune stimulator, possesses antiviral properties, effectively suppresses inflammation, keeps blood sugar low, normalizes hormonal levels and is highly beneficial in rehabilitation of a human body from various stressors.
The renowned Indian scientist dedicated to Shilajit research was Dr. S. Ghosal. His research was more pharmaceutical sciences driven with an attempt to understand the origins of Mumijo and standardization thereof. Dr. Ghosal with his associates researched Shilajit not only by itself but also in conjunction with other Ayurvedic herbs, showing how Shilajit can improve efficacy of herbal formulations.

Contents of Shilajeet
How is raw shilajit processed?
Approximately 40% of the raw material remains after extraction. Proper extraction is very important to guarantee a consistent high level of active ingredients, remove inactive substances, check for the proper PH, remove harmful free radicals and mycotoxin producing fungi and fungal toxins. Good quality Shilajit is then standardized to guarantee consistent levels of the active ingredients.

1. This is the only process, which brings out the most active components of Shilajit i.e., dibenzo–alpha–pyrones (DBP) to therapeutic amounts. The raw Shilajit contains 0.01% w/w, which is enriched to 1% w/w DBP in processed Shilajit.
2. The process would selectively bring out fulvic acids, which are the beneficial components of Shilajit humus. Furthermore, the content of fulvic acid (Not less than 20%) would be maintained from batch to batch which will be equiactive biologically. Fulvic acids occurs with microporic voids (200 – 500 microns.) and act as “carrier molecules” to small molecular weight substances like DBP.
3. The processing would remove the high molecular weight, Humins, which cannot be utilized by our body.
4. The extraction process would remove polymeric semiquinone free radicals from the Shilajit humus. Free radicals are responsible for causing damage at cellular and molecular levels.
5. The extraction process would also ensure the removal of mycotoxins and mycotoxin producing fungi and assure safety to the recipients ingesting Shilajit.
6. Standardization of Shilajit to 20% fulvic acids and 1% DBP would ensure a consistent nootropic activity, enhanced immunomodulation and very effective antioxidant activity, the three attributes responsible for slowing the aging process.

Guggul is a yellowish resin, which is secreted by a small, thorny mukul myrrh tree called commiphora mukul. The shrub reaches a maximum height of 4 to 6 feet and bears thorns on its branches. The leaves are small similar to those of neem. The flowers are red and the fruit is oval in shape and pulpy in nature. The gum resin excreted by the bark of the plant is called guggul. The plant is grown throughout the north India. The herb has been playing a major role in the traditional medicine of India. It is also known as guggul gum, guggal, gugglesterone, gugulu and gum gugal.

Plant Chemicals
(+)- resin, essential oil, guggulsterones, E stereoisomers, Z stereoisomers, gugulipid, myrrhanol, alpha-camphorene.

Uses & Benefits of Guggul
• Guggul possesses strong disinfecting properties and is a weight loss and fat burning agent.
• It lowers elevated serum cholesterol and triglycerides, while maintaining or improving the HDL to LDL ratio.
• The herb increases white blood cells count and reduces the risk of coronary artery disease.
• Guggul was historically used for a condition called medoroga, a disease similar to the modern atherosclerosis.
• Studies report that it increases the production of thyroid hormone. Since this hormone breaks down cells of protein, fat and carbohydrates, this herb is believed to be promoting weight loss.
• The herb is used as an anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving herb by many Indian herbal doctors.
• Guggul is useful in arthritic pains and helps in reversing the degenerative changes that occur in joints and bones.
• The herb is widely used in diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, gout, osteoarthritis, sciatica, paralysis, hemiplegia, lymphadenopathy, etc.
• Since it acts as a blood purifier, it is widely used in skin diseases.
• Guggul helps in promoting the production of red blood corpuscles (RBC) and improving the action of white blood corpuscles (WBC).
• It helps in strengthening the digestive system, easy secretion of digestive juices, works as an appetizer and avoids indigestion and constipation.
• The herb is beneficial in hemorrhoids and colitis and relieves from hyperacidity and belching.
• Regular use of guggul helps in improving sexual ability, sperm count and sperm quality.
• Guggul helps in treating leprosy and eczema. Its extract also helps in fighting tumors.
• The herb is useful in menstrual disturbances and painful menses.
• Guggul extract can generate side effects like headache, nausea, diarrhea, anorexia, abdominal pain and skin irritation in some individuals.
• Thyroid patients should consult a doctor before using guggul extract.

It is oleo-gum-resin from tree called Commiphora mukul. It is used individually in the form of Guggulu capsule and tablet. It is also used as binding agent and ingredient in many other tablets like Triphala guggulu, Yogaraja guggulu etc.
Guggulu alone is used in treating high cholesterol levels, rheumatoid arthritis, osteo arthritis gout etc. It has very potent anti-inflammatory activity.
However, constipation and gastritis are quite common side effects when this herb is used alone.

Triphala guggulu
It is a combination of five ingredients – Triphala+ Long pepper + guggulu.
It is mainly used in treating fistula, tumors, inflammatory conditions, and hemorrhoids.

Triphala guggulu Vs Guggulu –
When the patient has gastritis and constipation, it makes more sense to use Triphala guggulu in stead of Guggulu alone.
In a patient, if you need Triphala and Guggulu both, rather than administering these two as different capsules, it makes sense to use Triphala guggulu.
When there is ‘Ama’ (impaired digestion and metabolism), or when there is low digestion strength, it is better to choose Triphala guggulu than Guggulu alone.

Triphala guggulu Vs Triphala alone –
When you require more anti inflammatory action, when you need pain reduction, it makes more sense to use Triphala guggulu.

Triphala Vs Guggulu –
Even Triphala has cholesterol lowering and anti obesity effect. But the effect of Guggulu in lowering cholesterol is slightly higher than Triphala. I do not think there is any explanation required here. Both are two different medicines, used in different set of diseases.

Effect on Tridosha –
Triphala balances all the three Doshas. But it has special significance in balancing Kapha and Pitta Dosha.

Guggulu – balances Vata and Kapha.
Triphala Guggulu has Tridosha balancing effect.
This is just a general guideline to look into these three products and its comparative usage in different conditions. Of course, the decision finally depends on the experience and wisdom of your Ayurvedic doctor
